அகிற் குறடு
[ Agirkuradu]
- a. அகிற்கட்டை.
b. A fragrant wood known as Agil-wood or Indian scented wood- one of the five aromatics
Note : None of these terms will apply to Agil contemplated in Tamil Medicine for the reason that it is said “கள்ளி வயிற்றில் அகில் பிறக்கும்” which means that the word Agil will be formed inside a Kalli tree – Euphorbia genus.
Moreover, in the Tamil Materia Medica பதார்த்த குண சிந்தாமணி, it will be found that Agaru and Agil are differentely classified and different properties are ascribed to them; whereas no such distinction could be seen elsewhere. Even Doctor Ainslie, in his Materia Medica admits that he was not able to ascertain whence it came or what the appearance of the tree was.
It is not to be forgotten here that the bazaar men taking advantage of its rarity, sell under its name other fragrant woods which are cheap and easily procurable such as, Davadaru – Erythroxy Ion Areolatum, and red sandal – Pterocarpus santalinus.
