a. இது, சீனம், பர்மா, சுமுத்திரா, முதலிய இடங்களிலிருந்து இறக்குமதி யாகுஞ் சரக்கு. இது எலுமிச்சம்பழநிறமாக இருந்து, பிறகு பழுப்பு நிறமாக மாறும். இதன் துண்டுகள், கோணங்களாக அகப்படும். இதற்கு எலிக்கூட்டுப் பாஷாணம் என்றும், பொன்னிறம் என்றும், பலவகைப் பெயர்களுண்டு. இது மஞ்சளப் பிரகத்தைப் போலிருந்தாலும் மிக்கக் கனதியாக இருக்கும்.
இது அடியிற் கண்டபடி பலவகைத் தாயினும், கடைகளில் மூன்று வகையான சரக்குகள் தான் அகப்படும். ஒன்று பளபளப்புள்ள கம்பி பாய்ந்த சரக்கு. மற்றிரண்டும், மஞ்சள் நிறமான கட்டிகளாக விருக்கும். வைத்தியர்கள் இவைகளை விடாச் சுரத்திற்கும், கோள வீக்கங்களுக்கும், சன்னி நோய் வகைகளுக்கும், உபயோகப்படுத்துவார்கள். இது பாஷாண வகையில் சேர்ந்துள்ளதைக் கருதியே இவை ஆயுள்வேதத்திலும், யுனானியிலும் கையாள மாட்டார்கள்.
b. It is native of and imported especially from China, Burma, Sumatra and other places. It is of a lemon color, running often into red or brown. It is usually got in angular concretions. When thrown into fire, it emits a blue flame. It is also called "the Rat poison', the Golden pigment, and "kings' yellow sulphuret of arsenic or yellow arsenic'. It looks like yellow talc, but it is much heavier - Yellow sulphuret of arsenic.
Veidyans use this to check obstinate intermittent fevers, in glandular complaints, in apoplectic attacks and in certain leprous affections. As it is classed under poisons, it is not used in Ayurveda and Unani systems of Medicines.
Although there are several kinds as mentioned below, only 3 kinds are sold in the bazaar viz – one in glistening golden scales Arsenicum flavum - and the other two in massive lumps of yellow color – Arsenicum tersulphuratum and Arsenicum trisulphuratum (AS2S3).

பொன்னரிதாரம்
Yellow orpiment or golden pigment or kinds' yellow Sulphuret of arsenic – Arsenicum trisulphidum (AS2S3). Employed as a pigment it is used mainly as a depilatory (the drug that removes the hair). It is also sometimes used as a medicine.
மடலரிதாரம்
Orpiment in flakes.
தகட்டரிதாரம்
Orpiment found in thin leaves or plates - Concentrated lamellar concretions or orpiment.
வைப்பரிதாரம்
Orpiment prepared (artificially) as per process of Siddhars' science.
தாளகம்
Arsenicum tersulphuretum; used as a medicine.
கல்லரிதாரம்
(Stone orpiment) found in lumps.
NOTE: It is soft and flexible but not elastic. It consists of about 62 parts of arsenic (பாஷாணம்) and 38 parts of sulphur. The two kinds found in massive lumps (vide 1 and 9 mentioned above) are of a yellow color, the fracture in one of these being dull and the other resinous.
