- a. இது ஓர் வாசனை வேர். இது சாதாரணமாகச் சிற்றரத்தை, பேரரத்தை என இருவகைப்படும். இவை நிறத்தில் வித்தியாசப்படும். இன்னுமொரு விதமுண்டு. அது மேற்கூரிய இரண்டையும் விடச் சிறியது. வெற்றிலை வேரைப் போலிருக்கும். அதுதான் அரத்தை. சிலேட்டுமத்தைப் போக்கும் குணமுடையது. வடமொழியில் அதற்கு ‘தும்பிராஷ்டகம்’ எனப் பெயர். சுக்கைப் போல் அதன் வேரைப் கசாயம் வைத்து சுரம், வாதப்பிடிப்பு, பீனிசநோய் முதலியவைகளுக்குக் கொடுக்கலாம். அதன் விதைக்கும் மேற்கூரிய குணங்கள் உண்டு.
b. A fragrant root called Galangal - Alpinia genus. The roots are known by their thick tuberlike aromatic rhizomes. There are two kinds of it namely, the Greater Galangal or kinds drug - Alpinia galangal (major) and lesser galangal or the Chinesh galangal – Alpinia officinarum. These may be distinguished from one another by their colour. There is another smaller variety with still quicker qualities. It should not be confounded with the root of the betel leaf plant. It is called Nodding galangal' – Alpinia nutans. The root is given in infusion in fevers, rheumatism and catarrhal affections even as ginger is given and its seeds possess similar medicinal virtues or properties.
